Strength Training: Use It or Lose It!
Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches, clubs, and parents on another fantastic club season! Now that the season has wrapped up, each of our club teams has completed their end-of-season testing. If you stayed consistent and challenged yourself on a weekly basis, we are confident you saw great results, and from what we have seen, you absolutely did!
As we head into the off-season, I’m here to remind you that those hard-earned results follow a "use it or lose it" principle. Let’s say your spike touch went from 9’4” to 9’6” this season, that is a stellar 2-inch increase on your vertical jump! This is the result of your body adapting to the demands (training stimulus) you placed on it consistently throughout the season.
Unfortunately, if you remove that training stimulus, your body detrains back to its previous
levels. Before you know it, you will be noticing that you have lost those 2 inches on your
vertical. While volleyball might pause or slow down during the off-season, your training should not! Continue to make regular deposits and your progress continues. Stop, and you lose the progress you’ve already made!
Additionally, volleyball is incredibly demanding on the body. Many of you will return to your
high school season long before we see you again. If you have not kept yourself in shape, you
have a good chance of getting hurt, or at the very least “hurting” as you enter the long, grueling club season in December.
I’m begging you, train this summer!
While I wish it wasn’t the case, many athletes take the summer off from strength training. Not
only will you lose the results from your previous club season, but the off-season is actually the most effective time to get results! We see better results when training in the off-season!
Do not let your foot off the gas, this is your time to get ahead!
If you haven’t figured out your summer training plan yet, please feel free to reach out to us for
more information about our in-person and online training options.
Thanks again for trusting YF Volleyball with your in-season training needs, and congratulations on a great club season!
See you again in December (or hopefully sooner)!
